Authentic Materials and Cultural in EFL Classrooms

Authentic Materials and Cultural Content in EFL Classrooms
By Prof. Luis Vásquez Batista

Remember “English is an international language, and culture is an aid to motivate our students rather than something to be taught”
When authentic materials are going to be used you must be very careful dealing with the culture presented in it.
Using authentic materials give you many opportunities to show students which is the real environment of the target language, the customs and common activities it has, how is the context where the situations and activities are taking place.

There are many advantages if you are working with authentic materials, some of them are:
  • They provide authentic cultural information.
  • They provide exposure to real language.
  • They have a positive effect on learner motivation.
  • They relate more closely to learner needs.
Besides those advantages, students will work with realistic materials designed by native speakers, they will have new and interesting vocabulary that are use in real life situations based on the target language, will make students getting closer to the world (language) they are studying.
It has by the way, disadvantages in which teachers should be concern about them. Some of them are:
  • difficult language
  • unneeded vocabulary items
  • complex language structures
  • authentic materials may be too culturally.
Just keep in mind not overuse too much the unneeded vocabulary and the difficulties presented on the grammatical parts of the target language.
