Authentic Materials and Cultural in EFL Classrooms
Authentic Materials and Cultural Content in EFL Classrooms
By Prof. Luis Vásquez Batista
Remember “English is an international language, and culture is an aid to motivate our students rather than something to be taught”
When authentic materials are going to be used you must be very careful dealing with the culture presented in it.
Using authentic materials give you many opportunities to show students which is the real environment of the target language, the customs and common activities it has, how is the context where the situations and activities are taking place.
There are many advantages if you are working with authentic materials, some of them are:
- They provide authentic cultural information.
- They provide exposure to real language.
- They have a positive effect on learner motivation.
- They relate more closely to learner needs.
Besides those advantages, students will work with realistic materials designed by native speakers, they will have new and interesting vocabulary that are use in real life situations based on the target language, will make students getting closer to the world (language) they are studying.
It has by the way, disadvantages in which teachers should be concern about them. Some of them are:
- difficult language
- unneeded vocabulary items
- complex language structures
- authentic materials may be too culturally.
Just keep in mind not overuse too much the unneeded vocabulary and the difficulties presented on the grammatical parts of the target language.

"Teachers make a difference in student learning, and materials with effective learning strategies can support their impact"
If you give concrete and contextualize materials to your students, you will facilitate the adquisition of knowledge to them. Through a well organized materials, students will obtain a different view of the topics they are going to work with and it is going to be easier to accomplish the objectives that will be evaluated.
In order to have a positive environment it is also necessary for teachers to have defined motivational strategies and positive expectations. As much as positive the environment is, more students will feel free to express and participate during the lessons making a class more dinamic and creative just only by the way they are treated by the teacher.
There are many characterict that must be follow for a teacher: present positive expectations, give feedback, friendly, attentive and encouraging communication. Don't be so strict and remember that your students besides that, are human beings.

Principles of Effective Materials Development
By Prof. Luis Vásquez Batista

It is true because it is going to creative new ways of producing information and language that students will use.
Teachers shoul design output activities so that they help learners to develop their ability to communicate fluently, accurately, appropiately, and effectively. They should also make sure that the output activities are fully contextualized in that the learners are responding to an authentic stimulus, that they have specific addressees, and that they have a clear intended outcome in mind.
In order to accomplish what the author wanted you need to identified the materials that are needed and also explore and contextualize which materiales are needed more that others. Of course, you will have to evaluate the materials that will help you according to the objectives you want to work with.
